Start a New Club

Any group of 2 or more students with similar interests can create a new organization at the University of Idaho.

Benefits of Registering Your Club with ASUI

  • Reserve rooms at no cost in the Idaho Commons or Student Union Building (room set-up & equipment fees may apply)
  • Apply for up to $2000 in funding from the ASUI Activities Board each academic year
  • Sign up for an ASUI mailbox
  • Listing in the University of Idaho Involvement Guide
  • Booth space at events like Palousafest, Involvement fairs, and Vandal Friday.
  • Invitations to skill building workshops, presentations, campus luncheons, and other special events.
  • Access to ASUI Student Organization Center (computers, poster maker, art supplies, resource library, etc)
  • Eligibility for Student Organization Awards and ASUI Student Achievement Awards
  • Eligibility to apply for cubicle or storage space in ASUI Student Organization Center

 

Before You Register

  • Search the list of student organizations to be sure you are not duplicating a group that already exists. If a similar group does exist, you should contact their officers to discuss the possibility of joining efforts and resources.

  • Review the Student Organization web site. Hard copies of all resources are also available from the Student Activities and Leadership Programs Office (Commons 302).

  • Review the ASUI Activities Board by-laws, articles VI and IX (see below).

  • Look for the Student Organization Handbook, which contains helpful information for student organizations, including basic policies & procedures, along with privileges and responsibilities.

 

Application Procedure
To get recognized status for your organization, you will need to:

  • Apply on-line by submitting the New Organization Registration Request or print out a hard copy form, fill it out and drop it off in the Student Activities & Leadership Programs Office (Commons 302).

  • You will need the following basic information:

    1. 2 Student Officers with contact information

    2. Advisor with contact information (must be regular UI Employee)

    3. Mission Statement (50 words or less)

  • Create a Constitution (Sample Constitution - Word format, 27k) making sure to include the required Membership and University Non-Discrimination clauses.

Article VI-ORGANIZATIONS

Section A
To qualify as a registered club or organization, groups must file a completed request for registration form.

Section B
To qualify as an ASUI registered club or organization, groups must comply with the following requirements:

  1. All organizations must have an advisor. This person must be a University of Idaho staff, faculty, or administration member.
  2. All organizations must provide contact information for two members and the advisor. Information must include address, E-mail, and phone number for each contact. The advisor’s contact information must include the name, University Department, and Campus Zip Code.
  3. All organizations will be required to have:
    • A. Mission statement
    • B. Constitution and/or bylaws
    • C. Two member contacts.
    • D. An advisor
  4. An organization may not use “University of Idaho” at the beginning of the organization name or “of the University of Idaho” at the end of organization name, unless you receive direct funding from a University Department. Organizations may use “At the University of Idaho” or “U.I. Chapter” at the end of organization name.
  5. The majority of the membership of this organization shall consist of regularly enrolled undergraduate and graduate students of the University of Idaho.
  6. Only those members who are currently registered University of Idaho students have voting privileges.
  7. Membership in this organization is open to all University of Idaho students meeting the above criteria, irrespective of race, color, gender, class, nationality, disability, religion, Veteran status, or sexual orientation.

 

Section C
Organizations may be denied for the following reasons:

  1. The request for recognition form was not properly completed or was incomplete.
  2. The proposed organization has a statement of purpose or goal that is in violation of federal, state, or local law, or the ASUI Rules and Regulations.

 

Section D
Any group denied recognition by the board may appeal to the ASUI Senate.

Section E
The Board does not grant any organization non-profit status.

*Acceptance and recognition of a registered student organization does not necessarily imply the endorsement of the ASUI/Student Activities Office for any specific organization, its mission, or any of its activities or events.  This ASUI/Student Activities Office does not approve or monitor the activities or behaviors of student organizations.
