What is a sport scholarship?
Scholarships athletic as well as academic are much more common in the US than in most other countries. Sport scholarships are awarded to athletes of outstanding performance in order to enable them to finance their studies in the US. The athlete participates fully in practice sessions with the college team and represents the university in different tournaments and competitions. The coaches’ job is to professionally look after the teams and, therefore, has somewhat of the same position as a professor and is paid accordingly.

For what reasons are scholarships awarded?
For ages American universities have had college teams in all kinds of sports and employ coaches to professionally manage these teams, which serve as an advertisement for the respective university in numerous competitions. If a team has regional or even nation-wide success, the media covers those events. That is why, the college teams serve as a means to market the university in order to recruit new students. For this reason the universities provide the coaches with a budget to recruit talented athletes from around the world, so that those can finance their studies or even their entire stay abroad.

Who is it that eventually gives me the scholarship?
The coaches receive a budget from the university, which is left to their sole discretion. Therefore, it depends on the coach alone if he or she awards you a scholarship and, if so, what the amount should be. However, the coach cannot influence enrolment at the university. Your academic performance needs to be sufficient as well!

What is the performance in American college teams like, and what leagues are there?
American universities play in different divisions, the NCAA (National Collegiate Athletic Association) I, II and III, and the NAIA (National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics), which are divided according to the size of the university rather than according to ability. The NCAA I is the largest and best division of all, the NCAA II and NAIA are comparable and weaker than the first league. The universities in the NCAA III do not offer scholarships, but nevertheless consist of coached teams.

What is practice like?
For those who would not only like to make their studies abroad possible, but also improve their athletic performance, a scholarship for an American university is just perfect. Practice is very intense, it usually consists of two and a half hours of daily training supervised by coaches and assistant coaches. For the most part the training sessions take place in the afternoon between 2 and 5 p.m., after morning classes and before evening classes. Additionally, the teams do weightlifting and running sessions late at night or in the wee hours of the morning. Anyone who thinks he could laze about is quite mistaken. As a rule, practice is rather hard and very professional. Not without reason do many athletes enter the professional arena after four years of intensive college sport.

How good do I have to be?
Often times it is not rankings or best times that decides whether you will receive a scholarship or not, it is rather the complete image of an athlete, i.e. academic background and athletic development that is decisive. Besides, the standards vary quite significantly from college to college.
In order for you to be able to estimate your individual chances we have created a free prospect evaluation, which tells you, whether your chances are good to receive a scholarship.Check your chances for free here !

What can a scholarship amount to?
Generally, you can be offered a 100% scholarship from a coach. This means that both the tuition fees and the costs for board and lodging on campus are covered. We regard a scholarship to be adequate, if it covers at least 50% of all costs per year. Our service is constructed according to this view.

Will there be any additional costs at the college?
In addition to the costs for board and lodging, which will be (partly) covered by the scholarship, you will of course be responsible for your own expenses such as pocket money, flights home, excursions, insurance, etc. The university will not give you money, it will merely reimburse you for expenses like tuition fees, board and lodging.

For what duration can a scholarship be awarded?
Scholarships are generally awarded for one year, i.e. two semesters. It can then possibly be extended for another year. The maximum duration of studying with a scholarship is four years. However, the coach might not want to risk it and award you with a scholarship for one semester only at first.
